Sweet Summer

This is my love letter to summer.

Summer you are my favorite. I already have a crush on the energy of this particular season with its gentle beginnings. It feels super playful, flirtatious and fun!

Bring it on…

On Vancouver Island our summers are short and full of magic. With Loooong days, warm air, sunshine, and south swells. In Chinese medicine this is the season for connection to all things, particularly other humans and your own joyful heart. it is the time to go visit your friends and stay a little longer at that back yard BBQ soaking in the co-regulation of good company. The elemental force that animates this season is FIRE. A wild element that when harnessed and grounded can transform our lives. The dance is knowing when to allow the CALM of Yin energy to regualte the FULL Yang of this season. This will look different for everyone. I highly encourage being proactive with your practices in order to maintain your energy. So you not left feeling irritable and depleted at the end of it.

The heart organ governs this time of year. The taste is bitter, get that raw cacao and bitter greens in ya! Maybe not at the same time :) The colour is red, so go pick/buy yourself some roses and put on a sassy red lipstick. Plan a date night with your BFF and allow yourself to be playful and joyous. The heart opens to the tongue and activates speech. Say it as it is—don’t beat around the bush this summer. Tell the people you love, that you love them. The blood vessels and pulse are associated with the heart. What the heck does that mean in application to life? Think of your blood and how you can nourish yourself with good blood building foods like red beets, dark kale, beef/lam (medicinally), and red dates. All in moderation of course.

The Spirit of summer is called the SHEN which is in charge of our inspiration, insight, awareness, and compassion. Said by the ancients to be Spirit as infinite cosmic light of the Universe and manifests in the Yang energy that enlivens the psyche. It is the activity of thinking, consciousness, and memory. The intangible yet recognizable quality of luminous vitality that is seen in a healthy human being. Shining through the eyes and a vibrant complexion. The SHEN is the enlightened awareness and love that comes to us form the Divine.

So let your SHEN shine. Dance, skip, swim, play, love, be present to magic that is your life—it doesn’t need to be extravagant just simply notice the wonder of nature and human connection.

May your summer be filled with a bright luster and a glimmer like in a child’s eye.
